What's involved
In this half-day workshop, you will learn about the techniques and equipment that will help you become proficient in the art of contemporary gilding. It is suitable for those with little or no experience of gilding.
This workshop is an enjoyable introduction to the technique of contemporary gilding using Dutch Gold leaf and acrylic size (adhesive). This method is the modern variant of traditional oil gilding.
What this workshop will achieve for you:
An understanding of the difference between pure leaf gold and Dutch gold, and the differences between loose leaf and transfer leaf
A knowledge of the tools and equipment used in Contemporary Gilding and how to use them correctly
The correct procedure for preparing a surface to be gilded
How to apply the size (adhesive) in the correct manner
How to handle Dutch Gold
Develop the artistic technique of applying the Dutch Gold
The day
The workshop lasts for two and a half hours
Amelia will share her gilding experience relating to the use of the various types of metals, coppers and gold leaf mediums and the properties they each offer
You will learn about the preparation required to gild a picture frame
You will then prepare a picture frame for gilding, then gild it with Dutch Gold, and finally burnish it to a high quality
Next you will be taught how to gild a composite decoration
You will be shown how to gild a flower and have the opportunity to do this for yourself
Amelia will personally guide you through the whole process,
All tools, equipment and materials will be provided and are included in the workshop fees

This is a practical course aimed at beginners, however more experienced students are welcome. Over four days, you will master the art of traditional water and oil gilding. Using skilled processes, you will prepare a picture frame, decorative object, letter of the alphabet and picture rail for gilding with 23.75ct gold leaf, as well as learning the artistic skill of antiquing them.
Included in the course is a field trip to gain first-hand experience regarding historical gilded frames. When you have completed this course, you will have the skills to make and prepare Gesso using a traditional recipe and how to lay it smoothly as well as the techniques to prepare, gild and burnish gold leaf on any bare wood surface.
